What to Do Before Whitening Your Teeth
- Talk to a dentist – It’s always a good idea to talk to your dentist before you start whitening (even if you’re using a home kit). This is because there are some tooth stains that don’t whiten well, or even at all. These are typically stains that are formed during tooth development. Your dentist will be able to recommend an alternate treatment to brighten your smile, like bonding or veneers.
- Consider how much whiter you’d like your teeth to be – You don’t want to over-whiten, as your smile will end up looking unnatural. A standard rule is that your teeth should not be whiter than the whites of your eyes. You want your smile to stand out, but not be the only thing people see.
- Use fluoride toothpaste – This isn’t necessary for every patient, but makes a big difference for those with sensitive teeth. Fluoride toothpaste remineralizes your enamel, strengthening it against outside stimuli. After using the toothpaste for a few weeks, whitening will be more comfortable. This is ideal for patients with eroded enamel or exposed tooth roots.
